Little Moreton Hall, view from within the courtyard, Cheshire, England.
The finest timber-framed moated manor house in England. Begun in 1450
when the estate belonged to the Moreton family and finished in 1580.
The Moretons alas sided with the Royalists during the English Civil
War and paid a heavy price. They rented the house to tenants for two
hundred years from the early eighteenth century, and gave it in 1937
to the National Trust. The house stands
in tribute to the skill and ingenuity of the Elizabethan craftsmen who
built it.
